g loomis imx pro vs orvis recon

I was planning on a IMX Pro and then saw a new Scott a Tidal on sale ($350) and picked it up. Brand New (never been used) Broke my first one and this is the replacement. To read each staff memeber’s casting notes and performance finishing order, please click on their photo above. The G Series rod is slightly heavier than the Radian in both overall and swing weight but far heavier than the SKY G and NRX+ LP. Gusty wind was also a big problem, especially if the wind speed was above 10-15 mph. Douglas is one of the only manufacturers using the new Fuji Torzite guides as stripping guides. A lot of filler is used on these pre-shaped grips, but what can you expect for such a low-ball price? Only the Asquith was better, and the NRX was definitely better than the Meridian and Helios at extreme long range. Accuracy was just Ok, while the top seven rods were better. I notice the heavier swing weight than the Asquith. The Loop rods are designed in Sweden, while the Hardy and Fenwick rods are designed in England. We gave it a top score here along with the Asquith and Meridian. Better at mid-range but still not that great. Definitely one of the best Presentation Rods at long range, and even better for me than the Helios 3D! This is another great rod made here in the US at Park Falls, Wisconsin. Rods with a light swing weight are delightful and effortless to cast. A little waggle helps you to feel this. The Helios 3F and Meridian were also marginally better. We also had a revised version of the Douglas DXF that looked promising, and other new rods to test like the TFO Axiom II and the Redington CRUX and VICE. The new G. Loomis Asquith took first in our overall category, edging our 2016 winner by the tiniest of margins – 161.0 for the Asquith to 160.8 for the Scott Meridian! Under $400, the Douglas DXF and Hardy Shadow are neck and neck and terrific rods for the money. Nice loops and decent performance at mid-range, but the top rods were substantially better. 5. A gorgeous amboyna burl wood insert is used to complete this attractive rod. Seam reinforcements (scrim) are 100% graphite vs. graphite and fiberglass for all other materials (including the G. Loomis IMX, GL3, GL2, etc.). This 5-weight will be a pleasant rod to fish all day, especially with dry flies. Other repairs usually take 4-8 weeks. To me, the Sage X is a much more pleasant rod to cast and fish all day than the Salt HD. And finally this Spring I put it to use on big snook and redfish on Florida’s Gulf coast. G. Loomis rods are covered by a Limited Lifetime Warranty against non-conformities in workmanship and materials for the life of the original owner. I have the G. Loomis IMX Pro 11 ft 11 inch Trout Spey in 3 and love that rod. This is a fast action rod with plenty of power. The large diameter cap of composite cork on the fighting butt looks comfortable, and matches the cork on the handle. MOD 4 PIECE FRE... by SAGE. As always with Loomis, the most important feature of the IMX Pro is the blank itself. We’ve always been impressed with the Recon as it combines light overall weight and swing weight with exceptional performance – and all at a very reasonable price! The important thing here is for each rod to have the exact same length bonefish leader and tippet, and the same amount of yarn used for the indicator. Once we had the whole 100 feet stretched out, we would strip the lines into loose coils at our feet. The Zephrus and Helios 3F carried tighter loops though, and gave me far better accuracy. Impressive at mid-range. Orvis Men's Ultralight Wading Boot. Performance at 60 feet:  18.5 points out of 20. Overall weight is certainly a factor, lighter being better, but the swing weight is far more important. Lean on this rod and you’ll be amazed at the explosive power on tap. No points are awarded for this category, but we know that for many anglers, this is a factor in their decision to buy a rod. Look at the coatings on the rod wraps. SAGE X Switch and Spey - Two Handed Fly Rods. There’s a small superficial mark on the lacquer as pictured. The rods that score well in this category, with scores of 19 or above, can really drill them in there, even in a hard breeze. Using a rod that dramatically reduces the number of break-offs makes a lot of sense. The cork handle is a cigar style grip with very little swell and feels good in my hand. Steve claims this gives you more control and power at longer distances. The guides are two large SiC strippers, followed with hard chrome snake guides. The Aetos picked up a lot of points in the price and warranty categories and didn’t lose that many in the more important performance scores. From $1,150 View. Also in the Presentation group, the amazing Fenwick Aetos at $199.95 placed above the $800-$975 rods from Scott, Winston and Sage! The top scoring rods are easy to cast off the tip of the rod with very little effort. The cork handle is Sage’s mini full wells with a slight swell in the middle and proved very comfortable. Removing the spool is easy – just a simple click of the button on the handle side. Still, the best Power 5-weight Rods have enough power in the butt and mid-section to get the job done. Performance at 100 feet – 20 points availableAs I mentioned at the beginning of our Shootout, again this year we felt a need to rate the 8-weight rods at 100 feet. First, we zero out the scale with a small foam packing-pellet in the center of the scale, which we will use for a fulcrum on which to rest the grip of the rod. Howard is a terrific angler and one of the best I’ve fished with. Performance at 35 feet:  19.2 points out of 20. The matte finished black anodized double uplocking seat is one of the best we’ve seen. Some rods, especially the ones with softer tips, will give an angler much more feel and the ability to consistently put the fly just where you want it, and do it delicately. Scott does use the same great cork handle we see on the Meridian – a full wells design with a stack of thin, very high quality cork rings. All anglers have it. Performance at 35 feet:  18 points out of 20. The Orvis Helios 3F is another terrific rod from Orvis that we had not been able to test in our previous 5-weight Shootout. Pick any rod here that we rated a 9.2 or better and you have a real winner! Performance categories – right out to 100 feet. Non-original owner $150 per section. The lack of butt and mid-section power hurt a lot at long range. However, if all rods are measured on the same day, the relative numbers will be consistent. This fall the weather was more cooperative than usual here in Montana, so we decided to do the Shootout here, rather than in Florida. If you feel your rod has broken because of a defect, you pay to send the rod to their warranty department for examination. The Pro4x is based on last years wildly popular (and sometimes controversial) NRX series of fly rods, which also happens to be wildly expensive with most NRX rods breaking the $1000 mark. Sage Salt HD. Yes the BVK at $279.95 is marginally better, but you’ll have to spend another $30 to get a hard case. The guide set up is one of the best we’ve seen yet – two big titanium SiC stripping guides followed up with flexible nickel/titanium snake guides and an oversize tip top. With both the presentation and power rods, a good caster can place a dry fly within a foot of the target on most casts, as long as there isn’t a lot of wind. If your local shop stocks the rods you are interested in, by all means visit them, try a few rods and purchase an outfit from them. And as I explained earlier, there are instances when being able to cast 100 feet can help you catch a fish that would not be possible otherwise. The Aetos was FAR lighter in hand, and scored much better at all but the longest distance. Sage introduced their new Trout LL, which won the award for the best Freshwater Fly rod at the 2019 ICAST show. This rod has a nice fast action and the only real drawback is its heavier swing weight. Usually takes 2-3 weeks. yourname@email.com Navigation. With the inexpensive warranties that most manufacturers offer, your new rod is one that will last you for many years. G. Loomis Asquith   9 foot #8  $1100.00. Anglers have loved the performance it provides at a nice price. A full wells grip is used with high quality standard cork rings. In past Shootouts we tried measuring swing weight in other ways, including calculations for the Moment of Inertia, taking the weight of all 4 sections individually and then plugging these figures into an equation. The price – at $1100.00 this is the first production rod to break the $1000 barrier. Steve Rajeff fine-tunes all the Asquith designs, and then Shimano builds the blanks in Japan. Some of the best new rods from Loomis, Scott, Orvis and T&T use a stack of much thinner rings than we have seen in the past. The handle is a full wells design with a rubber ring at the top. St. Croix – Lifetime warranty to original owner, $85 handling fee for accidental breaks. The Recon was better and much lighter in hand. I grabbed my 9 foot #8 Loomis NRX, as this was the only rod in the boat that could get it done with its explosive power at long range. The fast action seems just right, and there is nothing in our Shootout that has this kind of performance at a price below $300.00. The Air was also in our last 5-weight Shootout, but like this year it was a little disappointing in performance compared to the best rods. When I first cast the new SKY G, I was amazed at how light and responsive the new Sky G was compared to the older version. Lots of people are using 5-weight rods for nymph fishing, often using a strike indicator, along with a combination of two nymphs and possibly some split shot or tungsten putty. We stock G Loomis fly rods - and each rod comes with a bonus fly line credit! On my own 5-weight rods, I’m normally using a 12-foot leader, with tippets from 4x to 6x, fishing dry flies. A car door or a bad fall might do it. The Recon was much better here. They have a slightly forward angle that allows line to shoot more easily. Just a cannon at the longer distances. 12′ 1X (14.5 lb. The ultimate goal for the new IMX-PRO Series of bass rods is to provide the serious tournament angler with a broad offering of high performance, technique-specific rods. An oversize tip-top is used. Performance at 100 feet:  19 points out of 20. The bright metallic green blank has dark brown wraps, trimmed with some gold on the butt section. Die ORVIS Recon Fliegenrutenserie umfasst achtzehn (!) Next, a layer of “muscle carbon” is wrapped on in a conventional manner. Only the Mystic Inception was heavier. Orvis Mission Spey $ 798.00 Select options; G Loomis IMX PRO Shortspey $ 605.00 Select options; OPST Micro Skagit $ 599.00 Select options; Echo Trout Spey $ 499.99 Select options; ACR Nova 2 Spey. Saving $500 or more is nice too! Douglas – Lifetime warranty. Surprisingly the 3F still did very well out long, matching the Meridian and Exocett! 3. The extension butt is nice looking, with a contrasting darker composite cork on the bottom end. The Loomis NRX gets a perfect score of 10 for their excellent Expeditor repair program which charges you $100 but you get a brand new rod, not a repaired one, in just a few days. To make it easier to examine each rod we have used different colors with a chart below each deflection board. Nice and light in hand but I’m not able to get as much feel or accuracy as with the Zephrus. I’m not getting quite as much feel as with the SKY G though. At 60 and 80 feet though, it hung in there with the best rods. I also love the rod sock that Douglas designed – one that will allow a rod that is put away wet to dry quickly. A small hook keeper is used. But as you will see, the best Presentation Rods produced outstanding accuracy, even at 70 feet! The stripping guides are the more standard SiC guides than the titanium ones found on the 3F, and the snake guides are the cheaper hard chrome ones rather than the much more expensive nickel/titanium snake guides found on the Helios 3F. T&T uses a silver anodized aluminum skeleton seat with a single up-locking ring, which seems to work well enough. IMX PRO MBR. At 25 feet it was very accurate, but I didn’t have quite the feel I experienced with the SKY G. The NRX + LP is a good looking rod, finished in a deep olive brown with darker olive brown wraps, trimmed in light gray on the butt. I especially like the handle shape, putting the swell slightly ahead of the middle of the grip. I do like the faster action and softer tip, but the Air didn’t seem to track as well as the top presentation rods. They use a stack of high quality cork rings but I’m seeing a little more filler than I found on the similar grips on the G. Loomis and Scott rods. This rod has a medium action and was the heaviest rod in our Shootout, in both overall and swing weights. I’ve been in the fly-fishing business now for over fifty years, as a guide, fly shop manager and finally owner. Reel seats should lock up easily and hold firmly, without having any tendency to come loose. This is a fast action rod but with a very flexible tip that gives it such great feel and accuracy in close. But are they $500- $800 better? The Meridian and even the BVK were much better. Only the NRX could match the Asquith at 80 feet. Performance at 35 feet:  18.5 points out of 20. backing and fly line. The Loomis rods get a perfect score of 10 for their excellent Expeditor repair program which costs $100, but returns the angler a brand new rod, not a repaired one, in just a few days after you call them. The Exocett is an impressive new rod from T&T. The blank is a deep olive green color, trimmed with slightly lighter green wraps. If only the tip breaks in an accident, the repair and handling fee is $35 including shipping. G.Loomis IMX-PRO Musky 1290-4 Fly Rod - 9'- 12wt - 4pc - New - FREE FLY LINE. Winston gives us two new rods, the Winston Air and their beefy Alpha+. The best thing about the Air is its appearance and craftsmanship. The G-7/8 is just a size down from the G-8/9 Nautilus that won our 2014 8-weight Reel Shootout. Not so hot at the longest distances. We have found that these hand-tied leaders, with stiffer Clear Maxima butt sections, turn over better and give greater accuracy than any of the knotless leaders on the market. As for reels, this year we again decided to use one of our all-time favorites, the Galvan Torque (T-5), loaded with 100 yards of 20 lb. The G series is softer and much more of a medium-action rod, and many anglers that prefer a medium action have loved this rod. The Asquith and NRX were noticeably better. Steve’s idea is to get your pinky and ring finger closer to your palm, which is not only a more comfortable grip, but also a more powerful one. Getting out of the skiff to wade was not an option as the marl here was so soft that one step out of the skiff and you would sink in up to your crotch. A little wiggle helps you to feel this. In the power category, the Loomis NRX+ is the same price – $795.00. Each section is numbered on the lower side, making it easy to line up all the pieces. Once we did all the casting to compare the two rods, it was obvious that the SKY G was a lighter rod in swing weight, and performed better at short to medium distances, where we gave it perfect scores. The G.Loomis IMX-PRO comes in line weights 4 through 8 and is available in 9-foot lengths for all line weights. However, nearly all manufacturers are charging a “handling fee” of $25-$100 to repair or replace your broken rod. Quick view. This rod is the natural graphite gray, and in Scott’s tradition, only lightly sanded, so that you can still see the tape marks. The best rods need to be able to cast very accurately and have the ability to make a delicate presentation that won’t spook wary fish. The locking rings are big and very easy to grip. Next, holding the rod in a horizontal position, we position the grip over the foam pellet so that the pellet is centered under the exact spot where you will most likely hold the rod with your hand. $169.00 Quick view. Last but not least is the great rod bag included with the aluminum tube that will help dry out a rod you might put away wet. However, we know that some of these rods would be better with a 9-weight line. The Recon is built at the Orvis factory in Manchester, VT. Complementary dark green wraps are used and finished beautifully. This way the four of us could be comparing two to three rods at once at our individual casting stations. Let me relate this story from our 2016 Shootout again: “A few years ago I was fishing in Cuba for bonefish in the Jardines de la Reina, where there are a lot of soft shallow flats. My son, Jamie is also a fanatical fly fisherman and a great caster. I love how easily I can cast off the tip of the rod with a flick of my wrist. Skip Zink, one of the testers in our last 8-weight Shootout, and said, “I think this new Asquith will be tough to beat in our next 8-weight Shootout!” How true this proved to be. The cork handle is a modified full wells, a Rajeff design similar to that on the Asquith. We were anxious to see how the latest new rods would stack up against our top 2016 Shootout rods like the Scott Meridian and Loomis NRX. We have two Redington rods in this Shootout, with the CRUX being perhaps the best one, but at $200.00 more than the VICE. The Paradigm is finished in a flat dark blue color, like the Avantt. TFO LK Legacy . I loved the easy to grip rings that made it simple to lock down a heavier saltwater reel. For others, seeing how a rod performs in an expert caster’s hands convinces them it would make them great anglers as well, or at least take them to the next level. They can take a design and fine tune it to perfection, making a few tweaks and design changes along the way to end up with the perfect rod that is needed. It’s hard to gripe about the cheap components, especially for such a ridiculously low price. It often takes a little time for the rod to “settle down” from all this movement so we do this procedure 4-6 times and then take the average weight we are getting from the scale. We typically have at least four casters giving you their comments in our Shootout. Douglas – Lifetime warranty for original owner only. Rods are repaired or sections replaced. I also like the handle design – it tapers outward, allowing you to quickly get and maintain a solid grip. The quality of cork is excellent. A comfortable full wells handle is used with contrasting composite cork rings at top and bottom. #20. An oversize tip- top is used. Once the grip of the rod is placed precisely on the foam pellet, with the rod in a horizontal position, we apply finger pressure, (usually by pressing down with a finger nail to the very end of the fighting butt), and read the weight we are getting on the scale. Tracks well and I’m throwing nicely controlled loops. Still have the rod tube it came in Favourite. Nice smooth loops and decent accuracy, but The Zephrus, SKY and BVK were definitely better. in temperate climates often use an intermediate line like SA’s Sonar Titan. Good, but not quite the accuracy I was getting with the Meridian, Asquith, or 3F. The lack of guts now becomes apparent. I don’t think people voting at IFTD ever cast this rod. Echo Bad Ass Glass 680-4 Fly Rod : 6wt 8'0" $289.99. $400 puts the Crux in that mid-price category, but when comparing it heads up to the Orvis Recon, the difference was like night and day! Then later in the winter I took it with me to Argentina, and had it bent over double landing Jurassic Lake rainbows up to 17 lbs. micron backing you’ll have capacity for 170 yards, all without overloading the reel. But is that high priced rod really $300-$700 better? The Galvan reels are essentially maintenance free, with Rulon bushings that require no maintenance or lubrication to keep them working properly. We also kept on hand for a quick comparison what we felt was the #1 rod in each performance category – the Douglas Sky in the presentation rods and the Loomis NRX+ in the power rods. One of the best things about the Meridian is the softer tip, which gives it wonderful feel and control at the shorter distances. Most rods rated 9.5 had a $50 fee. I think the extra swing weight hurt, as the Motive is a lot heavier than the Sage X or the other top rods. Since our Hot Butt leaders use the same basic formula as our Clear Butt leaders I often use the Hot Butt leaders, even for fishing dry flies. Just about any rod can turn over a 9-foot leader, but only the best casting rods can turn over a 12-foot leader at short distances like 25 feet. Both the BVK and Aetos felt better. This is a rod that won’t wear you down after a hard day of fishing. We would then strip it into loose coils at our feet while casting the rods. Patagonia Foot Tractor Wading Boots – Felt (Built By Danner), Armstrong Spring Creek on the O’Hair Ranch, https://douglasoutdoors.com/about/warranty-info/. One of the biggest differences is how much lighter in swing weight the new SKY G is than the old NRX LP. A black anodized double uplocking seat is used. Then to judge how fun a rod is to cast we added in categories like “Fun to fish/Got to have” as well as “Perfect 8 Performance,” which gauge what we feel are the very best all-around 8-Weight rods. $60 handling fee. Good, but not the kind of power I was getting with the Exocett or Meridian. $25 handling fee. I’m getting nice loops and good control as well as good accuracy at mid-distance. For this Shootout we used one of the soccer fields in Livingston with plenty of room to set the casting line and fine-tune it, depending on wind direction. The wraps are a medium blue, trimmed in green on the butt. As in the past, you will be amazed at how well some of the inexpensive rods do compared to rods that cost hundreds of dollars more. Built to the unrelenting specifications of professional fishing guides, the IMX-PRO series is comprised of 15 purpose driven designs to meet the performance demands of modern freshwater fishing. Other rods that are great out long but not quite so good in close are not going to win this one, either. $75 handling fee to original owner, $150.00 charge to all others. This makes the blank much stronger under “lifting load” with less overall material. Although Loomis' conventional GL2 series grabbed the Best Fishing Rod honors, the winner for Best Fly Rod -- the GLoomis Pro4x -- is the rod that will be of most interest to readers here. These rods are designed for professional guides and hardcore anglers that know exactly how they want to fish. Scott says this gives the G series a very smooth one-piece like flex and contributes to the smoothness in casting. It is slightly larger ahead of the swell than at the back. As in our last 5-weight Shootout, we have decided to use the Galvan T-5, a wonderful light reel with a very smooth and highly adjustable drag. This creates a noticeably lighter blank.
